It happens every year just as fall approaches. If you’re looking for a boatload of fun, you don’t want to miss the annual “Hernando Beach Marine Safety Group Cardboard Boat Race” which is held at 4139 Shoal Line Blvd in Hernando Beach. The race supports a 501c charity which helps the Coast Guard Auxiliary. The race is also sponsored by the Hernando Beach Marina.
This event is always guaranteed to be fabulously entertaining as you just can’t help but pull for your favorite captain and crew. This years race will be held October 12, 2019.
This race is all about innovation. Captains and crews build their own boats and the idea is to be the most innovative team and get your boat across the finish line first. And, we’ve seen some great boats. Of course, along the way will be ideas that just flat out sink. The boats I mean. And, the crowd cheers them on just as much, if not more, than the winners (or maybe it’s jeers, hoots, and hollers). There’s always a big crowd.
The Hernando Yacht Club and the Tropical Grill will provide some food and beverages. Kayak races start at 11:00 am and the cardboard boat races start at 12 noon.
The races are open to everyone. Generally, prizes are awarded for the best looking, the most unique, the fastest, and the Titanic Award for the most dramatic sinking. In addition, there’s always the Demolition Derby that follows the races for those willing to participate (some captains really don’t want to risk losing their ships believe it or not).
Think you’re up to the challenge?
Can you design a winning boat from cardboard?
